1. General information
This subject focuses on the acquisition by students of the specific competencies necessary to be able to work with language and its main functions, cognition, as well as multimodal communication, at a professional level.
Therefore, we delve into the functioning of communication, the description of the multimodal mechanisms (oral and gestural) offered by language for this purpose and their impact on cognitive language processing,.
It deepens and opens new horizons, unexplored during the degree, in theoretical and, especially, practical aspects of multimodal language from a cognitive-functional perspective
ODS 4, 5, 10, 16, 17
Requirements: advanced instrumental command of the Spanish language (Spanish B2 for non-native students); regular use of the Anillo Digital Docente (central tool for documentation and evaluation)
2. Learning results
1. To recognize the main elements of communication and their basic interrelationships.
2. To know the basic principles of semantics from different theoretical models.
3. To identify the explicatures of a text, recognize the problems and be able to disambiguate it.
4. To recognize and explain logical implicit knowledge.
5. To know the basic principles of pragmatics and the fundamentals of various models of analysis.
6. To recognize and explain non-logical implicit knowledge.
3. Syllabus
Unit 1. Introduction: language from the cognitive-functional perspective and communication.
Unit 2. Verbal communication. Topic 1: Cognitive mechanisms. Topic 2: Communication, language and culture.
Unit 3. Multimodal communication. Topic 1: Introduction. Fundamental concepts. Topic 2: Gestuality.
4. Academic activities
The learning process is based on (i) directed activities: participative face-to-face master classes (theoretical-practical) consisting of the teacher's exposition and explanation of the most relevant aspects of the functioning of language, especially from a cognitive-functional perspective, and in the active participation of students (questions, presentation of data, etc.), (ii) autonomous activities: programmed tasks (activities, exercises, bibliographic work, use of the virtual environment) of the students to put into practice and deepen the theoretical-practical aspects acquired in the classroom; and (iii) supervised activities: individual and group tutorials, advice and help with any aspect of the subject.
5. Assessment system
First call
a) Continuous assessment system
Assessment instruments: Students must individually pass two compulsory tests (100%):
Test 1. Activities: theoretical-practical tasks on the Units to show the knowledge of the functioning of multimodal language from a cognitive-functional perspective. Grading. 70%.
Test 2. Exercises: short practical exercises on the Units to become familiar with practical aspects, increase the critical, analytical and synthesis skills and the ability for autonomous work. Grading. 30%.
Assessment criteria:
- Both tests must be passed individually.
- Compliance with the formal aspects for the delivery of tests (templates, digital platform delivery, established dates)
-Critical reading of theoretical material.
-Collection and critical analysis of empirical data.
-Use of various sources to obtain data (experiments, corpus).
-Justified answers to the questions posed.
b) global assessment test (date set in the academic calendar)
Assessment instruments: Students must pass a test (100%):
- Theoretical-practical exam on any of the points included in the syllabus of the subject developed in all the materials that make up the subject (required readings, activities, exercises, etc.). Grading. 100%. Pass: 5/10.
Assessment criteria:
- Answers justified through theoretical explanations and illustrative examples.
Second call
As in the global test of the first one.
